Affordable Housing

Let’s Rebuild Housing That Puts People First
Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. But in today’s Canada, the housing market is treated more like a game for investors than a basic human need. While families struggle with soaring rents and unaffordable mortgages, big corporations are buying up entire neighborhoods. It’s time for real change and it starts with responsible leadership and action.
True Affordability, Not Market-Driven Myths
Government-backed housing projects are often still priced based on inflated real estate values making “affordable” homes unaffordable for ordinary families.
- Affordable must mean affordable rent or mortgage payments should never exceed 30% of a household's income
- Public funding must come with accountability housing built with taxpayer money must meet real affordability standard
- Income, not market trends, should determine housing costs
Housing Is for Living, Not Speculation
When housing becomes an investment strategy instead of a basic need, families lose. In major cities like Toronto and Vancouver, real estate investors now own a staggering share of residential units leaving regular buyers and renters priced out.
We will take strong action to ensure homes are for people, not portfolios
- Ban corporate takeovers of single-family homes
- End special tax breaks for large Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs)
- Introduce lifetime affordability covenants on publicly funded homes
- Close loopholes that allow real estate to be used for money laundering and speculation
A Bold Plan to Build Real Homes
Canada once led the world in building quality public housing and we can do it again. We have the skilled workers, the materials, and the technology. What we’ve been missing is government vision.
- Launch a large-scale, public housing construction program the biggest since the 1970s
- Create thousands of good jobs in construction, manufacturing, and the green economy
- Use sustainable, Canadian-made materials to support climate and economic goals
- Build homes that are safe, inclusive, and built to last
